Choosing the right pressure cooker is mostly about matching the capacity and material to the way you cook. A cooker that is too small can be frustrating for family meals, while an oversized cooker can be unnecessary for smaller portions.

What pressure cooker size should you choose?

Smaller pressure cookers around 1.5 to 3 litres suit one or two people, side dishes, lentils and smaller batches. Mid-size cookers around 4 to 6 litres are a practical choice for many households because they handle everyday curries, rice, beans, soups and family meals. Larger 7.5 litre and above models are useful for batch cooking, larger families and higher-volume kitchens.

Capacity is not the same as usable cooking volume. Pressure cookers need space for steam to build, so they should not be filled to the top. Foods that expand or foam, such as beans and lentils, need extra headroom.

Aluminium, stainless steel or hard anodised?

Aluminium pressure cookers are generally lighter and heat quickly. Stainless steel models are durable and easy to maintain, and many are suitable for induction when they have a compatible base. Hard-anodised models offer a harder cooking surface and are commonly chosen for regular use.

Check cooktop compatibility

If you use induction, confirm that the exact model is induction compatible. A pressure cooker that works on gas does not automatically work on induction.

Which lid style is right?

Different brands use different lid and locking systems. The best choice is the one you are comfortable operating and can maintain easily. Replacement gaskets, safety valves and other parts can be useful over the life of the cooker, so availability of compatible spares is worth considering.
